David Ramba, the Tallahassee lawyer who registered the 527 group that sent out a controversial mass mailing in the State Senate District 8 race, mocked Florida GOP Chairman Jim Greer on Wednesday after Greer condemned the mailer. The piece, which was first reported here on JaxPoliticsOnline.com, features a racially-charged message that accused Black Panthers of forging plans to interrupt the GOP primary for State Senate.
In a letter to Erin Di Cesare, the registered President of the Conservative Voter's Coalition, Greer condemned "both the content of [the] mailer and [the] use of the Republican indicia to imply an affiliation with the Republican Party."
In an interview with the St. Pete Times, Ramba dismissed Greer's complaints. "People can say 'Republican' in a mailer," Ramba said. "It's a free speech issue. They can use pictures of elephants. If not, Pier One will have something to say about this. They use elephants all the time. ..They better start suing the University of Alabama -- they wear out the whole elephant thing."
While voters may be left wondering just who is responsible for this mailing, there is one issue that has yet to be mentioned in the media. Any voters who return the mailing in hopes of receiving an absentee ballot may be sorely disappointed. After all, one of the requirements for requesting an absentee ballot from a local Supervisor of Elections is having the individual's name on the request form. An unobservant voter completing the request form sent by the Conservative Voter's Coalition may overlook the fact that, although there is a line for their signature, it appears that there is nowhere to fill in their name on the request form.
